Nothing Into Something

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. - Genesis 1:1-2 (KJV).

I once stayed in a guest room in a windowless basement. To get to that room, my host led me down a full flight of stairs that ended in the middle of a 20-foot by 20-foot empty, but immaculate, room with a gray, concrete floor. The door to my room was about 10 feet left of the last stair.

My host took me to my room, and, upon leaving, she turned off the light to the main room at the top of the stairs. We called "Good night" to each other.

A few hours later, I had to use the washroom, which was at the top of the stairs. With no windows, the entire basement was pitch black; I could see nothing. I groped for the light switch to my room but could not find it. My situation was growing urgent and I needed a shortcut. I opted to forgo the light to my room. I reasoned that the base of the stairs was straight ahead from my door, and, if I waved my arms while walking slowly, I should be able to locate stairs without tripping over them.

Instead, I found a wall. I believed it was the wall opposite my bedroom, so I walked toward the wall facing the base of the stairs. I paced the length of that wall and paced back to the middle. Then I groped for the stairs again. I soon found another wall. By now, I was completely confused. Walls were where they shouldn't be. The stairs were not where I thought they were. Nothing made sense. Had I remembered the location of the stairs incorrectly? Was I not walking straight? I walked the walls with my hands and found my bedroom door, but it was not on the wall I expected. This frightened me. How could I have made such an error?

In the dark, this empty basement was without form and an empty void to me. Though it had looked harmless in the light, darkened, I lost all points of reference.

A formless void is hard to imagine. It would feel like that basement felt to me, only without walls or a floor. A formless void would be a limitless realm of nothingness, with nothing to bump into, no direction whatsoever.

God created from nothing to show us how much he can do with nothing. From nothing, he created sky, birds, trees, clouds, people, flowers, canyons, sea creatures, animals with fur and scales, … Only because God transformed nothing into something, do we have a place to stand and things to see, hear, smell, taste, and touch. Only because God created all our senses and perception do we begin to imagine only a fragment of all he has done for us.

God already has made a start on each of us. Why not let our Creator complete the job? Why not trust him with all our life?

Prayer : O Almighty God our Creator, you create far greater things than we do. Let this coming year be a year of transformation for us. Teach us to fully trust your work in us. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully, In Jesus Loving Name I Pray, Amen."

Have a Blessed Sunday and God Bless you.
