Precious Life

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.- Genesis 2:7

An old joke goes something like this:

A group of scientists decided that God was no longer necessary. They chose one scientist to report this to God. The scientist went to God and said, "God, now that we know how to clone people and do other miraculous feats, we find that we don't need you any more. So, you can just leave us alone."

God listened patiently and, once the scientist finished speaking, God said, "Very well, but first I want to see you make a man just like I made Adam."

The scientist grinned broadly and eagerly said, "I have no problem with that." Then he stooped down and grabbed some dirt.

God instantly blew the dirt from the scientist's hand. The scientist placed his hands on his hips and said, "What'd you do that for?"

And God said, "Use your own dirt."

Scientists today probably wouldn't think of creating humans from soil. Typically, scientists say humans evolved from animals. Typically, Bible literalists say God created humans from soil. However, both side-step the more important perspective—that we are inherently different from animals because God combined his breath, or spirit, with ours. That's what makes us human, an image
of God. Without his breath, we would not be human.

Without God's spirit, we have knowledge without his wisdom. With his spirit, we are prone to noticing similarities rather than differences in each other. With his wisdom, we know how to love those who do or say things that jar us.

Let's de-emphasize the argument between scientists and literalists and emphasize the importance of our connection to Our Creator.

Prayer : Our Loving Lord God, life is precious because your breath mingled with ours is precious. Thank you for sharing your spirit with ours. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully, In Jesus Loving Name I Pray, Amen."

Have a Blessed Saturday and God Bless you.
