What We Notice

And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. (30) And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so. -Genesis 1:29-30.

In my college days, times were tough. A friend was considering sharing an apartment with another college friend and invited me to look at the place with her. It was a hot, sticky summer day. The air conditioning system in the living room was exactly four open windows.

We were enjoying a conversation with the current tenant when a commuter train passed by on the tracks just across the street. The room shook and we had to stop talking because we couldn't hear one another. After the train passed, my friend asked the tenant, "Do the trains bother you much?" and the tenant replied, "What trains?"

Of course, the tenant was joking, but we do tend to grow so accustomed to our environment that we overlook it.

God didn't want us to overlook the environment he created for us. God requires us to use parts of the environment for food. To do that, early humankind had to learn what was digestible and what was not. We had to learn how to grow it, how to prepare it, and how much of it we could consume without destroying the crop.
We must study nature in order to continue eat. Farmers are still studying better ways to use the land efficiently.

Still, we don't notice God's Word in nature. We study nature. We ingest some of it. We live among it. We use it to create other things. But we miss its most fundamental value. God spoke and created the universe. His Word is in all of it. He requires us to study nature. His hope is that we find his Word there.

Do we know anyone who looks for it?

Prayer: Almighty and Heavenly Father, You are the Lord of all Creation, we have overlooked the purpose of your creation, that we discover your Word it. Somehow we find it easier to spend years learning to read so we can read your Word in the Bible. Send your Holy Spirit to guide us in the reading of your Word in nature and in the Bible. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer.
Gratefully, In Jesus Loving Name I Pray, Amen."

Have a Blessed Monday and God Bless you.
