Learning From Our Elders

And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:-Genesis 4:2-4.

The youngest of several children I watched regularly was a toddler when I moved to another state. I had babysat the older siblings often enough that they had grown respect my disciplining style. By the time I moved back a little more than a year later, the youngest had forgotten who I was.

I was again babysitting the children when the youngest misbehaved. I told her that her behavior was inappropriate in my usual firm but calm way. She lashed back, "You're not my mommy and I don't have to listen to you!" Her older brother immediately stepped in and admonished her for speaking to me that way. He told her to respect me in a way that seemed beyond his 10 years. He told her that I would respect her if she respected me. She understood and never crossed me again.

The youngest learned to respect me from her brother. Her brother learned from our relationship that had developed over the years.
Similarly, Eve had developed a relationship with God, and taught her sons to respect God. She didn't want God to punish her sons for their disrespect. She taught them that giving gifts to God showed respect, so they each offered gifts from their labor.

Prayer: Our Heavenly Father, thank you for providing people who can teach us about you. We sometimes forget that you created this world for us and those we love. Our elders can teach us how to honor you. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully, In Jesus Loving Name I Pray, Amen."

Have a Blessed Saturday and God Bless you.
