Leadership Positions

Today's Scripture

“When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place…they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.” Acts 2:1-4 NASB.

Thoughts for Today

Who was the leader of the early church? Peter? After all, he preached a sermon on the day of Pentecost that led “about three thousand souls” to respond (v. 41). Peter continued to act like a leader—preaching, providing direction, and interfacing with the establishment.

But the Bible also describes how the 12 disciples (acting as a unit) summoned the congregation and announced that preaching and prayer would be their priorities. They asked Believers in general to select seven men who could be “put in charge of” practical matters. The “whole congregation” approved this decision and chose seven deacons (Acts 6:1-5).

Later, Paul emerged as a powerful ambassador, teacher, and evangelist. Yet he made it clear that he was not the only leader. When controversies arose from his ministry, the matter was referred to the Jerusalem church, where James, the brother of Jesus, emerged as an important leader.

Through all of these experiences, the Bible shows us that the real leader was the Holy Spirit. Jesus had told His disciples that they would “receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you” (Acts 1:8). Following the day of Pentecost, the church discovered that the Spirit would direct them, call them, give them power, correct them, and purge them.

As the church grew, they realized new ways that the Spirit would lead them. It was the Spirit who called specific people into leadership positions (1 Corinthians 12:1-13, Ephesians 4:1-12).

That same Holy Spirit is ready to guide you, your church, and your family. He is the same Spirit who guided and empowered the early church. He is ready, but you must allow Him to lead. Seek to be filled with the Spirit, sensitive to the Spirit, led by the Spirit.

Prayer : Our Loving Heavenly Father, Holy Spirit, speak to me today. Guide me. Teach me. Direct my steps. Fill me with Your power. Help me to accomplish Your purposes. Use me. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully, In Jesus Loving Name I Pray, Amen."

Have a Blessed Friday and God Bless you.
