The Right Priorities

Today's Scripture

"The disciples were astonished at His words…And they were greatly astonished, saying among themselves, `Who then can be saved?'" Mark 10:24-26 NKJV.

Thoughts for Today

The man seemed sincere. Running to see Jesus, he knelt reverently before Him. Then he asked, "Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?" (v. 17) Jesus focused on key commandments, which the man said he knew and kept.

But Jesus said he lacked one thing: "Sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me" (v. 21).

Jesus had identified the one thing that prevented the man from a deeper spiritual life. The problem? He had "great possessions" and was not willing to give them up (v. 22). He thought he was interested in eternal life, but, in fact, his possessions dominated his life.

After the man left, Jesus told His disciples, "How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!" When they heard this, His disciples were "astonished" (vs. 23-24). Jesus had given them a perspective that was completely counter to their expectations.

Jesus didn't condemn possessions or suggest that God doesn't want to bless us in tangible ways. But He was teaching about the nature of eternity and the importance of priorities.

Through this story, we see God's interest in blessing His people. We also see how easily possessions and the things of this world can control our lives and become stumbling blocks.

Blessings flow to those who are absolutely committed to God and who are willing to give up everything to follow Jesus. This commitment keeps things in perspective and establishes right priorities. It assures that we not only will
be blessed here on earth, but also will "inherit eternal life" (v. 17).

Today, make sure that you have the right priorities. Remember that God desires to bless you. But His blessings are unlocked when you commit your life to Him and seek first His Kingdom (Matthew 6:33).

Prayer: Our Loving Heavenly Father, I surrender my time, talent, and treasure to You. I seek first Your Kingdom. Use me to accomplish Your purposes. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully, In Jesus Loving Name I Pray, Amen."

Have a Blessed Saturday and God Bless you.
